Four Eyes *na na na na naaa naaa* .............. << previous // next >>
Tomorrow is Canada Day!!! This beautiful country of ours is turning 137 years old! So to all the fellow Canadians out there, I hope you go out, enjoy the day tomorrow, and celebrate being a Canadian! The world is such a big place, but at times it seems even bigger, especially when you're like me, standing at a mere 5' 3"...I'm pretty much petite all over. I have small hands, small feet, a slender figure, all of which can be both a blessing and a curse. Apparently I'm told this makes me 'cute'....*rolls eyes*... My eyeglass prescription has increased, which is unsurprising, thanks to the genes my mother passed on to me. I've been wearing glasses since I was in grade 6 and I'm used to the rituals of walking into an eyeglass store every 2 years and picking out new frames. There's an annoying advertisement on television for Lenscrafters and one of their catch-phrases is: "Are you lucky enough to wear glasses?" Apparently the 'clever marketing genius' who came up with that line must not wear glasses and must not have a heavy prescription. I wouldn't be surprised if her/his vision is 20/20. Who the heck would WANT to have to wear glasses? That's like saying, "Are you lucky enough to have a pacemaker?" Yes, I know that I'm exaggerating my point here, but you get the drift. Anyone who has myopia (that's the academic term for near-sightedness) knows full well that wearing glasses is a total pain in the derriere. In the winter when you go indoors after being outdoors, they fog up, not only making it impossible to see until it de-fogs, but also making you look weird, especially if they de-fog from the centre of the lens (a le hibou style). Of course the biggest pain of all is when you have a somewhat heavy prescription and have a limited selection of frames to choose from. The larger the frame lenses, the thicker the lens that can be seen from the sideview. The more round the frames, the thicker the lens looks. My first pair of glasses were the ugliest things you ever saw. I was in grade 6 and clearly didn't know any better. When the salesperson said, "You look darling in those." I bought it hook, line, and sinker (I stress the sinking part). They were SQAURE, PINK, and RED...yes...when I went for glasses, I got the nerdiest pair in the universe. Did I know that at the time though? No. Looking back, I don't know what could've possessed me, but I'm guessing the Eyeglass Phantom that I know really exists and preys upon innocent victims, causing them to choose the wrong frames. Oddly enough those ugly frames were 'designer frames' made from the company called "Guess" -- haha, as though that means anything more than the price tag being jacked up by an extra $100! They had a sale though (probably because they hadn't been able to sell the tacky frames), so it was under $60. THAT is inexpensive when it comes to eyeglass frames. Throughout the years, I've been through about 3 other frames before the ones I currently purchased this week. Everytime I DO go shopping for frames, it's always Mission Impossible (minus the buff Tom Cruise -- whose real name is Thomas Mopather by the way). Eyeglass stores always order huge quantities and a wide selection of frames that fit the average-sized face, which of course for me, translates as: They are much too big for me. The part of the frames where the lenses go are usually too big. When I put it on, I literally look like a bug, because the sides stick out far too much than what looks 'normal.' Aside from the sticker sizing they place on the lens (which range from Size 5 to Size 12), each of the frames has the more specific size printed on the inside part of the frame. This can range from 42 mm to 52 mm -- This measurement is obviously of the lens portion only) Anyway, they have a ton of frames that begin at the size of 47 mm and many above that, but of course (as Murphy's Law would assert), the size that is ideal/optimal for me is either not available or comes in only a small handful of styles. Thankfully, I DID manage to find ones that were 42 mm. This is important, because my eyes are smack dab in the centre of the lens (as it should be). These are my smallest pair yet. After my first red pair atrocity, I never bought another square frame (nor a red frame or any other tacky coloured frame). I veered towards oval-shaped ones. For a long time now, I've been dying to try out those narrow, rectangular frames, but not the thick black plastic ones a la Ryan Malcolm (ewww). I like the ones that are made of metal and which are thin and very studious-looking, but not too nerdy. Hurray! I found the perfect pair. They're by the company Roots and they ended up costing me roughly $200 (just for the frames). I think these are my most expensive frames yet, but I think it's worth the price if it fits right and feels comfortable. Afterall, I only change my prescription every two years and I probably won't change these frames for another 4 years. These frames minimize the thickness of my lens. They're not totally straight-edged rectangular frames. They're slightly curved so that they don't look as harsh on me. I had to get the nosepads adjusted a lot because......... I have been cursed with long eyelashes. SO, not only do I need to find small frames, but I need to get my glasses adjusted like crazy because a lot of frames fit too close on my face and my eyelashes touch the lens (which it shouldn't). If I had shorter eyelashes, I would LOVE to go with a pair of glasses without nosepads....the kind where they just sit on your nose...BUT, I can never, because of my long eyelashes. Long eyelashes are a blessing if you're a model or if you don't wear glasses, but if you need prescription glasses, it's annoying! Okay, we haven't talked about the price of lenses. If your eyes are pretty bad like mine, you can expect to pay around $200 just for the lenses (that includes anti-reflection/anti-glare, UV protection, high index Nikon lenses) So, as a rough figure, it costs me about $400 (not including tax) just to be able to clearly SEE the world around me. It sucks more than a leech on a hemophiliac. You're so UNlucky if you wear glasses. The odds are against you and that's just my brutally honest opinion. Take for instance the dozens of films that portray a nerdy woman (usually a school geek or a librarian -- both epitomized as the classic loser): They are always shown wearing those disgusting thick black plastic owl-eye-sized frames and their hair is always in a bun. Two movies that come to mind are: "The Music Man" and "She's All That"... Both perpetuate this laughable stereotype. I especially get a kick out of "She's All That" (possibly one of the worst movies out there, aside from "Dumb and Dumber" and it's sequel "Dumb and Dumber-er"). In "She's All That", the nerdy girl is a nerd when she wears glasses and has her hair tied up, BUT, once she takes her glasses off and lets her hair down, lo and behold, we have a smokin' siren...a hot mama...a real babe....*Rolls eyes* Puh-lease! I dare you to watch any makeover television show such as "What Not to Wear" or "A Makeover Story" where the makeover victim wears glasses. During the whole transformation, they usually are told to ditch the frames and get contacts because as everyone knows, glasses are for nerds, nerds aren't sexy, and only people without glasses can be sexy. *Rolls eyes* Gimme a break, people! I think this way of thinking is so primitive. I'm sure there must be some sort of evolutionary psychological explanation for why this always happens. I'm guessing that back when cavemen went out with their clubs to slay a beast to eat, cavepeople were attracted to those with good vision (possibly as a sign of good health or as reassurance that their mate would pass on strong genes). In any case, I don't care much for frames (for ME personally). I think they look smart on lots of other people who fit the society-labelled "average size." BUT, for a person like me who has to go through hell and back just to find the right frames that fit AND look good, I'm ready to give up on eyeglasses. In the next week or so, I'm going to make an appointment with the contact lens specialist and get fitted. Contact lenses promise 20/20 vision because they fit and correct the cornea. Also, with contacts, there's no fogging up of lenses and you can see everything completely, without the annoying outline of your frames. I will give contacts a try (it will be the first time ever). I realize that contacts require more time to clean them meticulously and such, but I'm hoping that it will be worth it to free myself from the eyeglass prison I've been contained in since the 6th grade. If I go for contacts, I will probably go for the disposable ones (wear them for 6 months and then throw them away) and if it isn't TOO much more, coloured contacts too (green being my first choice). Anyway, you can be sure that if I end up getting contacts, you will be one of the first to know, for I'll write about my experiences with them in here... Before I end my rant on bad eyes and such, let me make one last important remark: WITH or WITHOUT glasses, I will still be a nerd and a proud one at that....*wink*...so bite me...(and I'll bite back...grrr).. Since school ended back in April, I've had more time to leisurely read books at my own pace. I usually don't like to sit down for the whole day and just read a book from beginning to end. I like to read a few chapters every night just before I go to bed. The only exception was "Frankenstein" (the original 1818 edition) by Mary Shelley. That book, I literally read straight through in one sitting because I just couldn't bear to put it down. I soaked in every elegant word and every perfectly constructed sentence. Since school ended, I've read "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" both by J.K. Rowling and both for the second time. Even though I gave the 5th installment (Order of the Phoenix) a second read-through (a second chance to impress me and for me to catch something I might have missed the first read through), I will admit that I read through it with the same feelings as the first time I read it -- that is, with great disappointment. Goblet of Fire was so much better. I also recently finished reading "The Diary of a Young Girl: The Definitive Edition" by Anne Frank. This is an incredible read! For details of my book reviews, click on the link to my website (The Mystic Realm) and go to the subpage link "Books." Today was such a beautifully sunshiny day. I walked around my neighbourhood and through the park. It's one of those days where there's just enough of a refreshing breeze that you don't overheat. Everything is peaceful in the summer and yet at the same time, so full of life. People are out, walking around more instead of driving their gas-guzzlers here and there. You hear more laughter from the children playing outside on their lawns and in the parks. It's my favourite season and the season I live for. Bring on the heat and bring on the humidity. I love it.... As of this moment right now, I am super excited for three reasons: Emm Gryner is recording songs for a new album, Christina Aguilera has been or will shortly be recording songs for a new album, and the sixth Harry Potter book (now confirmed to be: "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince") may be published within the year or next year...Those are three things worth looking forward to.... Anyway I've got to check on my laundry and put it in the dryer, so I'm off! Until the next time (which is hopefully sooner -- I plan to write another entry in July), take care and always remember to spread the sunshine even when others are raining on you with their dark storm clouds!!!!
