Yes, You Are Insane, Honey.... .............. << previous // next >>

Tuesday July 22nd, 2003. - 7:05 PM

Why is it that whenever someone learns I'm studying psychology, 99.9% of the time they look at me seriously and ask me to "analyze" them? It's as though they really are expecting to hear that they suffer from an acute disorder, which was only previously found in specific albino mice in the Netherlands....*Smirk*...Sometimes I play along and use my goofy antics to come up with gobbelly-gook that sounds highly academic, when obviously it's not. I say, "I want you to draw a picture for me on this piece of paper." and they oblige. Often the people I come across draw flowers, the sun, or a smiley face (if they're in a good disposition). Well, playing along with their cracked up idea that I'm some kind of professional psychologist (when I'm just a student and far away from that goal), I make a few sounds like...hmmmmm.....uh huh......"Well, that is interesting, [fill in a name]. Judging from your aggressive strokes and the pressure you applied on the paper, I'd say you'd have what is known as AAD - Acute Aggressive Disorder. It's when there is too much testosterone in your hormonal level. Wow, I have never seen someone with such unsafe levels in any of the readings I've come across!" (Please note: There is a disorder having to do with severe aggression, however, I merely made up all that "academic" gibberish to strike a nerve with the people that ask me to "analyze them"). After hearing that, usually, the person will look at me wide-eyed and fearful...as though their deepest darkest secrets have been revealed. Of course, being the terrible meanie I am, I wait a few more seconds for my words to sink in....and then I laugh and tell them I was only kidding. Geez, the things some people are willing to believe. It's insane. Yeah and there IS a difference between psychologists and psychiatrists. If you don't know, look the words up in a dictionary...or...you could just read on and be lazy like me...hehe. The difference is that psychiatrists prescribe medication to their clients and usually psychiatrists' patients have much more severe symptoms/disorders that need tending to. Also, please note that not all psychologists analyze people's personalities or assess for disorders. That is such a cliche and I'm sick of people using it. There are personality psychologists, social psychologists, organizational psychologists, environmental psychologists, counselling psychologists, educational psychologists, industrial psychologists, engineering psychologists (etc!!!)....so WAKE UP ALREADY! Also, just because I'm studying psychology does NOT make me a God or a psychic. Even most proper psychologists won't judge you based on only one puny drawing, so why ask me to determine what you're like in a 5 minute time frame? Get real, folks.

(Now on to Multiple Personality # 682)....

Today the second season of Felicity, a television show, is available in a 6 DVD set. I've ordered it for a good deal. Geez, I love that show. Sure, it's unrealistic and Felicity Porter always seems to be crying, but the characters really draw you into their world, through their eyes. Plus, the great eye candy helps too, on top of great acting. I'll admit that I never gave the show a chance when it was aired on TV. It was only when my Dad bought Season One's DVD set that I was hooked. Who would've known? Anyway, so from what I've seen in the Season One episodes, my favourite characters are Felicity Porter (for her frenzy antics and spontaneity) and Ben Covington (for his risky behaviour and mysterious gaze). Anyway, season two, from what I've read, has lower ratings because Keri Russell (who plays Felicity) cut her curly tresses. Now I ask: People, are you watching the show for the story OR are you watching Felicity's HAIR? (("HAIR!" you all yell in unison))...Oh boy...Well, I don't, but at least now we all know a great way to sabotage a show -- just get a haircut. Easy, huh? But shhh...don't let the producers know I let you in on the "secret".....*rolls eyes*

The show I desperately want to own on DVD is Gilmore Girls (PLEASE don't get it confused with Golden Girls....the shows are COMPLETELY different!) I've already signed a petition for it and that's all I can do....well, that and wait....I hope they come out with it soon. That show is pure quality entertainment, not to mention a great palooza of pop culture jokes. If anyone out there also loves the show and wants to see it on DVD, please go to my main website (The Mystic Realm - you'll see the link under the diary menu and at the end of the entry) and check out the "Favourite Links" subpage. With hardly any effort, you'll be able to sign the exact same petition I did and hopefully with our numbers ever-increasing, we'll be able to see Gilmore Girls come out on DVD sooner.

(Make way for Multiple Personality # 442)....

As much as I'm embarrassed to admit it, I will confess: I got swept up and away into the whole Harry Potter insanity...Well, I did NOT stand in line at midnight to be the first one to purchase a copy of the newest installment (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, for those of you who have been living beneath a moss-covered rock). Here's how it all started: I was enrolling in a Children's Literature university course for the upcoming fall/winter term and I noticed that low and behold on the reading list, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1st book in the series) was listed. (Oh, and for you Americans, you know it as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone -- why the change in titles, who knows?) Anyway, so then I happened to be looking at some flyers and I noticed a sale on a Harry Potter set containing the first 4 books in the series. Since I would be saving $20 (Canadian) plus tax off the cover price and getting it conveniently in a boxed set, I figured, hey....I may as well. So, I started reading it and I'll admit that in the beginning, I was thinking, "Why the heck do people think this is so darn great?" It didn't seem THAT great...but then I recall that from page 190 or so, THAT's when the first book started to take off for me a bit. Plus, I really liked how at the end, Dumbledore (the Headmaster of Hogwarts - the school of witchcraft and wizardry) gives the morality lessons. The second book had a quicker pace to me than the first and was written much better, although I must say, to me, it seemed to.....lack something (???)...I don't know what. My favourites were the 3rd and 4th (with the 4th: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire being my ultimate favourite). In the first 4 books, the thing I hated was how J.K. Rowling (author of the series) kept re-explaining terms like Muggles (non-magical people) or...how Harry got the scar on his forehead. I mean, in 1-4 (as I remember), Rowling kept explaining those things to the reader all over (as though they had never read the previous books in the series). Sure, it makes each book in the series able to stand alone, but for a person who has read every single one, it was lame and almost...forced. Nevertheless, Rowling's simple way of writing makes her books easy reads for me. I whizzed from cover to cover.

At the beginning of July, I bought the 5th and latest installment. Call me weird or whatever, but I always prefer paperbacks to hardcovers (not because of the price -- although it's a factor -- but because paperbacks just feel more comfortable for me to hold while reading......for some reason). I was a bit disappointed to see that only the hardcover edition was available. BUMMER...<--haha, I never say that, hmm...I guess this really IS Multiple Personality # 442! So, the regular price is a wallet-slimming $43 (Canadian) and usually I see that there's 20%-25% off, BUT, guess what, kiddies? You'll be so jealous. I got my copy for only $20.50 (Canadian) and yes, it was in mint condition, straight from the press. Also, everyone has seen those yellow covers with the colourful phoenix picture on the front. Well, mine is the RARE "adult edition"....Now, I know that when people think "adult" nowadays, they seem to think XXX...*Sheesh!* NOOOOOOoooo.....it's not an XXX Harry Potter (haha, imagine!), so calm down! The text is exactly the same as the children's edition, only the cover (dust jacket it's called) is different and geared toward adults (duh!). It's brownish and it's got a gold phoenix on top of flames. Also, the name Harry Potter on the cover is in metallic gold...It looks really nice. It's rare to an extent. It's very verrrrrrrry hard to find in bookstores, since it has been rumoured that only 10% of all the new Harry Potter books were made in the adult edition. Your best bet is buying it online. (Oh, and by the way, I haven't finished reading the book. I only started reading it not long ago...and I usually only read around 50 pages per sitting to make the story last longer...I'm not competing with anyone on how fast I can finish it because if I wanted to, I could be done with it in a day. No healthy competition like that exists partly because none of my friends are into it and I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I am.......hehehe)

Now, I really didn't mean to drag on and on about nerdy Harry Potter, but so I continue: My favourite characters in the series are Hermione Granger (she's the intellectual bookworm) and Professor Dumbledore (the all-knowing headmaster at Hogwarts). My least favourites would be Ron Weasley (an immature wimpy boy) and...Crabbe and Goyle (who are mindless followers who don't say much). I've managed to watch the Harry Potter movies (at home, not in the theatres) and I have to say, they don't do the books justice. Most of the actors/actresses need serious help in acting. I can't stand that boy who plays Harry Potter. From the movie, my favourite characters (based on talent, looks, and how well they portrayed their character) are: Draco Malfoy (that blond Slytherin boy who always carries a smug, sulky, or sly smirk on his face...I think his name is Tom Felton???)...and...I also really like Lucius Malfoy (the long blond-haired father)...He really portrays his character excellently! In third place is Professor Snape (the gothic, black-haired, pale skin, professor in the Slytherin house). He suits his role incredibly well. Oh, and of course I almost forgot!!!! (I can't believe I almost did!)....that girl who portrays Hermione Granger (in the Gryffindor house) does a GREAT job too, although, I still think Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) has better acting skills. It's interesting how my favourite characters from the movie are all in the Slytherin house (which is supposedly the house that churns out most of the Dark Lords who serve Lord Voldemort)...but in the books, I go more for the "good guys" (example: Hermione and Dumbledore)...

"Okay! Enough about Harry Potter", says Multiple Personality # 720. The world has heard enough of it. It's like a new age cult.

I just can't get enough of that classic song "Sometimes When We Touch" by Dan Hill. That song is right up there in my list of favourites. I've recently become so obsessed with it that I've actually downloaded several different versions of it with different singers and different musical arrangements. It's just like me --> to like a song and then play it over and over to its death. Hmm...maybe I should go work for a radio station, since that's what they all do -- BUTCHER SONGS! *Smirk*

Oops, Multiple Personality # 442 wanted to mention one more thing before fleeing back into Mary's brain: I have been going crazy over chicken wings...especially the style that I make them --> shake and bake......mmm......I use just the right spices and gosh, I can totally pig out. I just thank the Lord that my metabolism is naturally high, so I can gorge myself and not have to worry about the size of my hips...

Move over, # 442, here comes Multiple Personality # 100!!! I've also purchased the Lord of the Rings books in a boxed set. It comes with the trilogy novels and also "The Hobbit"...I got it for about $30 (Canadian)...pretty good deal. I've never read it when I was a little kid, but now I'm finding it more attractive. Yeah, yeah...the movies helped...hehe.....but nothing and I repeat...NOTHING....No book out there will EVER EVERRRRR top the works by Mary Shelley. Shelley is my absolute favourite author and there is no one who can contend with her. She's my inspiration and...hehe, yes, you can tell I'm in love with her writing skills. Sure, her books aren't easy reads, but the depth and intelligence behind her writing is undescribable the way it touches my soul.

Okay, I am going to stop with the "Multiple Personality # blah blah blah"...hehe....because THIS is Multiple Personality # 1....that's right....ONE....the cream of the crop....the supreme one that over-rides all other personalities......HAHAHAHAHHAHA (yeah, it's the INSANE one.....muahahahaha....just joking and sorry if I scared anyone)...Anyway, I think my gibberish will come to an end....for now.....muahahahahahaha.....I hope to write again soon. Until then, take care and always remember to spread the sunshine........(muahahahah <-- sorry, I had to leave you with another insane laugh just to give you the chills)...

*~* Mary Shaw *~*

P.S. Just for the record, NO, I do NOT suffer from multiple personalities....but it's fun to pretend you do.....haha

SONG STUCK IN MY HEAD: "Sometimes When We Touch" by Fifth Avenue (it's a remake of Dan Hill's original song and it's certainly worth hearing)

LAST SONGS I LISTENED TO: "Security" by Stacie Orrico (what a talented girl!) and "This is the Night" by Clay Aiken (He really should've been the American Idol instead of Ruben Studdard)
