Bacteria is the Only Culture You Have .............. << previous // next >>

Sunday January 21st, 2007. - 6:13 PM

I’ve decided to revert back to my old ways, since I’d rather write entries when I feel like it instead of making it seem like a drab chore. Writing diary entries should always be fun. That’s why I began it in the first place.

From now on, whenever I’m bored and have free time, I’m going to scribble in here with my rants of fury sprinkled generously with sarcastic humour and laden with insecurities and curiosity. Maybe this will mean that there will be an entry in here only once every few months or maybe I’ll write more than ever before because I’m not bound by promises.

These days, I’ve been so busy. When I’m not at my full-time job, I’m staying out late at night. I come home in the wee hours of the early morning only to crash in my comfy bed, with Pingu (my cat) curled up at my feet. Since I stare at a computer monitor for 8 hours, Monday through Friday, it isn’t any wonder that I try to avoid my digital friend like a plantar wart plague when I’m not at work.

Music comforts the soul and electrifies the emotions. Recently, while browsing with my boyfriend at a little independent downtown music store, I purchased 3 albums on a whim. They were: (1) "La Fin Du Monde" by The Hylozoists, (2) "She’s Got Party Davis Eyes" by The Old Soul, and (3) "604" by Ladytron.

I had heard a couple of other Ladytron albums and loved them, so "604" wasn’t much of a leap of faith. I was more the bullfrog when it came to The Hylozoists and The Old Soul. I hadn’t heard anything about either of them, but my instincts told me to buy them anyway.

With song titles like "Bacteria is the Only Culture You Have" on the latter and the use of glockenspiels on the former, how could I go wrong? Besides, I usually have good luck picking the Unknown Gems from a musical haystack. Now, if only I could spin straw into gold without having to give up my firstborn.

It was love at first listen with The Hylozoists. It’s very calming and charming, with delicate, fun melodies. I think that I’ve listened to the entire album about 4 times since Friday and I haven’t gotten sick of it yet.

After a quick Googling of The Old Soul for more information, guess what I just found out? Apparently there were only 1,000 copies made for retail sale and the rest are sold only at the tour shows! I got one of these very limited editions. Can you believe it?

The first adjectives that come to mind after I took The Old Soul disc for a spin are: whimsical, silly, and funny! The group has a unique sound and when I went to put it on my iPod, Apple iTunes put "Unclassifiable" for the genre category…hehe. Of course I changed that later.

If we wind the Life Tape back to December of 2006, I was heavily into The Raveonettes. I purchased their album, "Pretty in Black." I appreciate their vulnerable, melancholic vibe. I also have their "Chain Gang of Love" album, which was recorded in B flat major.

A lot of their songs are very mellow and seem like they’d fit in perfectly as background music for a western film (even though their songs are not at all country). Hey, and there’s even a song called "Here Comes Mary." It’s pretty depressing, but I like songs that are intense.

My Mission: Impossible became Mission: Accomplished last month too. For many years (yes, YEARS), I’ve been on the lookout for the perfect pair of winter boots that not only are practical (i.e. able to handle the typical frigid Canadian winters) but also stylish. I met my Sole Mate!

The leather boots are just below the knee and have a side zipper. There’s a significant heel, but I find it so comfortable. Plus, they’re made right here in Canada! To put the cherry on top, they fit my feet and calves perfectly AND they were on sale. I think they were about $275 or so, but I got them for around $200.

I have small feet and normally wear women’s size 5s, so it’s a bitch fest when I go shoe-shopping, but these size 6 boots fit like a fashion stylist’s dream come true! I always find great things by a fluke and this was no exception. I was just browsing at Town Shoes and there it was, beckoning me (and realistically, my wallet) to come hither.

Finally pulling in the monetary reins of self-restraint, I’m proud to say that I haven’t bought another Coach item since my last diary entry. I swear, I should join CA (Coach Anonymous) because I keep checking out what new designer purses they offer.

Eventually, I WILL make another purchase. It’s inevitable because for Christmas, my brother and his girlfriend gave me a Coach gift card. At first I was going to get something small like a Coach charm or key chain, but then Matty (my boyfriend) told me that he might drop a few hundred dollars for my birthday and then I could combine that with the gift card to get a Coach purse. Hehe...he’s so evil for playing upon my obsessions, eh?

Oh…and for Christmas, Matty got me my first 100% cashmere item ever! It’s a v-neck cardigan from Banana Republic. I love wearing it because it feels soooooooooooo soft and it’s warm yet is incredibly lightweight. The sleeves even fit me perfectly and the color is a nice neutral, which goes with practically everything. I think that it cost him $225 or so. I know…that’s a lot of money, but I love it and I wear it often enough to make it worth it. Plus, you can’t go wrong with a classic cashmere garment in your wardrobe.

As for work --> I’ve been promoted and now in addition to being a Writer, I’m also donning the shiny job title of Project Manager. I also still train new writers, which is really fun and rewarding. Impressed with my work, my bosses decided to give me a salary raise, as well as a significant, monthly commission! I’m so pleased to see that all my hard work is paying off.

I used to think that if you keep seeing someone day in and day out, soon enough, you’ll get sick of the person. However, my unique relationship with Matty is happily proving that it’s not the case. We work together for 8 hours and usually hang out after work and on Saturdays.

With all this exposure, you’d think that he’d get tired of being with and seeing me. It seems like as each day goes by, we keep discovering more interesting things about each other. It feels more like there isn’t enough time. We always want to spend more time together, which is why we’re so crazy and I get home at ungodly times like 4 a.m. on week nights.

Okay, it’s fair enough to say that we’re infatuated with each other. Neither one of us has said the Three Magic Words yet, but that’s okay because we have such deep-seated feelings for each other that when we utter those words for the first time, it will be meaningful and reinforcing.

I’ve learned from relationships in the past that it does no good to rush into professing your love. It has to come naturally and not too early. I also respect Matty a lot because he doesn’t throw around The Words liberally, meaning that when and if he says them, it will mean more and I will explode with ecstacy.

My birthday is coming up in February and I considered taking a few days off work to travel somewhere that I’ve never been. I’ve done minimal traveling and I’m at the stage in my life where I want to explore and try new things, even if they intimidate me.

I may spend a few days in New York. If I take a couple of weeks off work, I would like to check out Australia in the summer. Oh, and maybe this summer or the next, I want to go to California with Matty. I’ve been to Los Angeles once before and he’s never been (but he wants to check out California). It will be hella fun!

Okay, I need to immortalize a few things for myself in my diary. They will sound meaningless to all of you, so feel free to skip this paragraph or read it and enter the wonderful world of confusion. *Smirk* Things for me to always remember: M _ _ _ _ _, *nodding* "We should go", Cloud Kisses, TF 15 seconds, 1 hour lunches, Office Badass

I’m excited beyond words because I came up with an amusing concept for a humourous book and Matty and I will combine our Writing Forces. I smell success. It’s a sure winner if we follow through ‘til the end. My conceptual idea is by far THE BEST one I’ve ever had, so I’m quite giddy.

Plus, it helps that his dad is a former magazine editor and has previously published a successful science fiction novel (that is sold online and at bookstores worldwide). Once we finish writing our book, we’re going to run it by his dad and try to use his connections to writing agents and such to help us get the book published.

There are a bazillion and two more things that I can continue rambling about, however, every good writer (much like a responsible drinker) knows when to draw the line. Here I am, scribbling a wavy line...Until the next time, keep your nose clean, be as passionate as you dare, and challenge conventions!

Spread the sunshine,
Mary Shaw
