A Scribble and a Scrawl .............. << previous // next >>

Dear Diary,

I haven't been writing as much as I'd like to lately, because with my Finite math and Calculus courses, I have been preoccupied with finding permutations galore, the limit and the slope of the tangent. *sigh* Such is the fun life I lead. [Note the obvious sarcasm] Anyway...as if two math courses weren't enough for me, for my Finite Independent Study, I had a choice of either writing a 1500 report and then presenting it to the class OR I could tutor a class of a lower grade in the mathematics curriculum. I chose the tutoring assignment, because quite frankly, I don't think that I'd have time to write an essay and prepare a presentation. Besides, the tutoring is only going to be for 2 weeks. It seems simple enough, and I enjoy helping others out. Anyway...so then, after the tutoring sessions are complete, I will have to write out a 1 or 2 page assignment, which expresses my opinions, feelings and thoughts on my experience(s).

So, today was my very first day tutoring. I got a Grade 9 Advanced class. It was pretty full. Anyway...so there was this one guy who asked me a very silly question. He asked, "Is OAC harder?" In my head, I was like DUHHH.......I just ended up telling him that it's more ....CHALLENGING......than Grade 9, but if he is dedicated, he'll do well. I tried to be very positive. So, they had a quiz when they first came into the class. I snuck a few peeks at the questions. They were things like percentages......"Find 35% of 1489" etc. etc. etc. They were all really simple. When I was in grade 9, I think that the questions they gave us were more enriching...Education is changing......*tsk tsk* Okay, so then, after collecting the quizzes, I was to go around while they did their in-class work from a handout. It was straight-forward. The handout was on fractions (like adding and subtracting)...I suppose it was a review or something. So...there I was, just walking around the classroom and checking this and checking that. I corrected some answers and some students needed explanations for how to subtract fractions!!!!!! Then, there was a student who wrote 6 as the answer to 3 squared. I guess it was a careless mistake that she overlooked. Anyway...9 more days left to go before I'm through with this tutoring business....I can't wait to get out, in a way. You can just imagine how sick I am of numbers by now. This is my schedule. I have Religion Literature (that's one course), Finite Math and then Calculus for this semester. Most of the day, I'm looking at numbers and doing some sort of calculation!!!!!!!!! ARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really cannot wait for next semester to roll around.....then I'll be doing the fun stuff (like Writer's Craft, OAC Physics and Peer Helping). Meanwhile, though.......I have to study my butt off...*grin*....

Okay, so today, the guidance counselor held a brief meeting in the library. All those who wished to attend university in the upcoming year were to meet there. Obviously, I was one of the many. He distributed the "INFO" booklet...that is...."The guide to Ontario universities for secondary school students". It's got a lot of information.......WHOA! Information OVERLOAD!!!!! *WARNING* *WARNING* !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's quite useful though. It is a convienient booklet that has everything you'd want to know about each university and the programs they offer. I was checking out the Psychology (Arts) program and there are so many places I can choose from. I would like to get into a co-op program, but we'll see what happens. I was also looking up how much it would cost to live in residence for certain campuses. *Phew* with these prices, I'm so glad that I've got my $15 per hour job. That will definitely help my financial issues. I do hope to earn a scholarship though. I'm going to apply for a lot of them. My mother's, friend's daughter (who is also a friend of mine), is a year older than I am, and she has just started taking the psychology course that I'm interested in. Back in the summertime, I spoke to her and found out that she got a scholarship. Her average was in the 90's! WOW! Smart girl! Anyway....so...since she got a scholarship, her parents were nice enough to pay for her residence fee. So....when she does come back here, it will be interesting to hear what she has to say about her experiences at the university.

Anyway...I have to go now and study my Calculus...Take care and try to SPREAD SOME SUNSHINE!!!!!!!!!! *muah* Love ya!

Signing Off,

MISS MARY SHAW
