Feeling Hella Good .............. << previous // next >>

Friday July 5th, 2002. - 7:07 PM

Hello everyone! Today is a gorgeous day out! *Smile* The weather has been spectacular for a long while now. A lot of people would disagree with me, because many don't like so much humid weather. Being the quirky person I am, I actually enjoyed the humid and sticky weather. I love it, so long as I don't have to walk around a lot in such conditions. Right now the humidity has went down, so it's still warm, but much more comfortable.

Alrighty! Enough about the weather! *Smile* What have I been up to lately? Well, lots of mischief really, but a girl's gotta keep some secrets to herself. *Grin* Anyway, a week or so ago I went all over the place with Maggie. First I met her at university because she wanted to sell a few of her course books back to the bookstore. As it turned out, their offerings were measly, and we were told that the optimal time would be in August, as demands would increase by then. I felt sorry for Maggie, because now all those 7 or 8 books that she was lugging around, she would now have to lug around the entire day. Good thing for her that she brought a knapsack though. Then after that we took the bus to a local mall.

The subway we took lacked air conditioning and it felt like we were in an oven. Then, I caught sight of a lady sitting not far from me, who was eating a delicious ice cream bar!!! *YUM* We caught each other's eye and I said to her, "Ohhh! It's so tempting!!!! Are you enjoying it???" She said yes, and kept on eating it and enjoying herself. Meanwhile, I was wishing that I had one at that moment too, because it was way too hot and there's no ventilation on the subway car. A few minutes later, I faced the opposite direction so that I wouldn't be so tempted by her ice cream bar. Then, Maggie and I start talking about stupid guys and this young man (clad in hip-hop gear) was looking at us the whole time and smiling at me. I smiled back just to see what would happen and he got all shy and nervous and started looking all around and then at his feet. Awww sweet!!! *Smile*

Anyway, at the mall, I was trying to help Maggie find a good Polish-English dictionary for her cousin back in Poland, but let me tell you...the task was next to impossible!!! You wouldn't think so, but just a peek in any bookstore, and you'll believe me. They often carry one or two, but they're usual not the best quality, or the text is hard to read (i.e. in a bad font.) Sure, they had some phrase books, but then that wasn't good enough for Maggie's cousin. We were trying to find something with more words (hence the word dictionary.) Guess what? In all the bookstores in that mall, we discovered that they all carried the same rotten handful of Polish-English dictionaries, so it wasn't very helpful. Oh, and previously we had looked at the university's bookstore for it, but even THEY didn't carry a decent one under 20 bucks!!!

So, we hopped on the subway and after getting off, we walked a few blocks and reached a Chapters bookstore, thinking that they would have a larger selection to choose from. We were wrong!!!! They had the same measly choices we had seen in the other places! So, I went to ask an employee for help. His name was Derek I think and good grief, out of all the people, I just had to pick him. Big mistake! This guy was one of those "older men" who, when seeing young people, would try to act all "cool" and "with it." He was trying so hard that it was actually pathetic, and his blackish two front teeth weren't helping his image either...haha. Anyway, so he was a flake I tell ya! He told us that the dictionaries were upstairs, and continued to lead us up THREE STEPS (hardly qualifying for the term 'upstairs') Anyway, so then, trying to impress us or whatever, he made a crack about suicidal employees threatening to jump down the stairs to their death (obviously he was making a crack that no one could possibly kill themselves falling down three measly steps.) I laughed out of politeness. He then brought us to the appropriate dictionary section and showed us their pathetic selection. Since Maggie was on a tight budget (i.e. she had to find a dictionary under $20), I asked Derek what we could get for twenty dollars. Trying once again (and horribly I might add) to look "cool," he started joking about how we should buy some liquor and then sell it to get cash and make a little business out of it. Not impressed by his immature flakiness, I sarcastically asked, "Is that how Chapters' employees are trained now?" He was such an attention-seeker. With a character such as this guy, I wouldn't be surprised if he was actually following his own advice. He laughed and made a joke about how it was his idea and then all the other employees had copied him. At this point, I just wanted to get out of the store. I couldn't take his desperate attempt to please. Then, as fate would have it, there was another employee helping another person directly across from Maggie and I. She was older (as she had grey hair.) Derek turned to this other lady and got her to confirm that they did indeed re-sell booze. They both laughed and the lady said something like, "Oh quiet now. This guy over here [the one she was helping] is training to become a police officer!" Then the lady started telling us that they (the people at Chapters bookstore) only let him (Derek) out once in a while. Upon saying that, my imaginative mind visualized Derek in a cage and being let out only once a week....haha...It got a giggle out of me. They started to chuckle again, and by this time Maggie and I had snuck over to the left to not only get away from these two delusional souls, but also to browse through the dictionaries we had found. It actually took about a minute before the two employees had stopped laughing and noticed that we had left the area. I mean, who wouldn't leave when in the vicinity of two obviously knocked-out people???

Anyway, upon flipping through the 2 dictionaries, we decided that we needed to go elsewhere because yet again they weren't good enough. Then, as I was putting on my sunglasses and getting ready to exit the store, guess who shows up? The same lady we had seen just minutes ago! She comes up to us and says, "You two were looking for Polish-English dictionaries. Is that right?" We both say yes and then she actually tells us to wait, because she's going to double-check the shelves to see if they're there. Umm...does she not trust her fellow employee or something? If it wasn't there 5 minutes ago, I don't think that it's gonna be there now..*poooof* just like that...and (sarcastically) oh what a surprise, it wasn't there! In fact, the lady told us that there is an incredibly low demand for those dictionaries and that we'd be better off finding them at Polish schools. Gee, thanks.

There's this large bookstore downtown, and at the moment it just hit me (between the eyes, if you need to know) that if we'd find it anywhere, it would be there. So, we asked for their phone number. We got another employee to call the store and place 2 holds for us. So, we finally left the store and headed to Country Style to get a cool drink before taking off for downtown. It was a humid day and we had been walking here and there and just about everywhere. We deserved a nice cold drink to keep us alive and awake.

At Country Style, I was going to get an iced tea drink (my favourite, but not necessarily from Country Style.) Then, Maggie ordered this new Iced Lemon drink, and so, I thought that I should try it too and try something different than the usual. This was my second big mistake of the day. The drink was disgusting!!! At first, okay, it was good because we were hot and it cooled me off fast (since most of it is ice, afterall.) But then after a while, it started to taste like some nasty lemon cleaner or something. It was way too lemony (artificially.) We couldn't decide if it tasted too sweet or too sour. It did create a lot of nasty phlem in our mouths though, so it probably was sweet. Then, as we were walking back to the subway station, as we were drinking still, we passed by this disgusting road where the air was fragranced with the smell of sewers!!! UGH!!!! Drinking that lemon drink and smelling sewage made my stomach churn and I honestly felt sick to my stomach. I was so glad when we passed that area. I was able to breathe again! Really, you don't appreciate clean air until you've been exposed to stinky stale air on a hot and humid day.

So, we hopped on the subway and made our way downtown to that large bookstore. Before we got there, we checked out this homey-looking bookstore that buys old books. We thought that hey, we might as well try there since it's on the way. To our delight we found a Polish-English dictionary here (but again the print was bad) and Maggie ended up selling 4 of her books here. She got a better deal here than from the university bookstore. We headed over to the larger bookstore to see the books we placed on hold. After a while of flipping through them, we decided on getting one of them. The print was a little hard to read, but it was the best one we had seen the entire day. Relieved that we had finally found what we were looking for, we checked out the local mall and alleluia air conditioning!!!!

Guess what? We bumped into one of our mutual friends, Kamila. She was shopping at Smart Set or some clothing store like that. We talked for a little bit, but then Kamila had to leave the mall to get to work I think. Oh yeah, and before I forget to say, a funny/embarrassing thing happened to Maggie at the mall. She turned around abruptly and in doing so, walked face first into a fat man's belly! Haha...I couldn't stop laughing for a little while, nor could Maggie (of course her face was red though.) Meanwhile, the guy who she walked into was with a woman (probably his wife) and she was glaring at Maggie with these evil eyes (if ever I saw them.) Haha...(sarcastically) if Maggie told me that she wanted to meet some guys so desperately, I would've suggested something other than walking into a belly...haha...(Okay, I've laughed long enough about it. I think that I've killed the joke...not just killed it, but massacred it.)

Later on, Maggie and I were kinda tired too, so we ended up departing half an hour later. Boy, when I got home that day, I was pooped out!!! We walked so much and it was nice to see Maggie again. I hadn't seen her for a while, so we had a lot to talk about.

Hey...a little over a week ago, I saw Avril Lavigne (one of my current favourite singers) perform!!! She was awesome and I really enjoyed it. Her whole group puts on a fantastically energetic performance. The blond guy who plays the guitar is hot hot hot. His name's Evan. Anyway, I took along my digital camera and of course I was snapping away like mad. I got over 40 great pictures of the performance. I posted a handful up on my main website. You can view them if you click on the link found at the bottom of this diary entry and to the left menu, and then if you go to my lyrics page. I adore her music and I've been overplaying her CD way too much. It's almost in obsessive proportions! Haha...but whoa, she's absolutely talented!

Since I'm on the subject of music, I've been downloading some more songs using that WinMX program. I was never really a big fan of No Doubt. I was more a fan of Gwen Stefani's outrageous/funky style and confidence. Anyway, for fun, I downloaded some of her new songs on her "Rock Steady" album and surprisingly I found a few of them quite catchy. I also downloaded some of No Doubt's older songs. Right now I've been constantly listening to their songs "Hella Good," "Ex-Girlfriend," and "Detective." I also downloaded Oasis' new song, "Stop Crying Your Heart Out." I love it!!! Also, a good song that I discovered from watching Roswell a long time ago is this one by Fountains of Wayne called "Troubled Times." I love music, but you already knew that, didn't you? *Smile*

Wow, looking back at what I've typed up so far, this entry is boring, boring, boring!!!!! Geez, you'd think that after I hadn't written in here for quite a while, that I'd have something more interesting to say. Hmm...but no, not really. Anyway, I think that this is my cue to end my entry. It wasn't a complete waste of time...hey, it might help someone with insomnia!!! Haha...okay, hopefully next time my entry will be more insightful. Take care and always remember to spread the sunshine because your rays of light might just brighten up someone's storm clouds! *Smile* Bye for now!!!!!!
