Still Smiling .............. << previous // next >>

Saturday November 1st, 2003. - 6:41 PM

Out of sight, but I hope not out of mind! Dear visitors, I've been a super duper busy little bee minus the black and yellow stripes. In August, I was completely preoccupied with the event of my father experiencing a minor stroke. It was quite a scary uncertain time, but we got through it. Then, when school started up in September, right from the get-go, I was hopping around (or rather, buzzing around, since bees don't hop), working hard to get my schoolwork finished. Many nights have been spent reading articles and completing assignments until my eyes became sore. It's almost reminiscent of my days in high school when I used to fall asleep in my bed with a textbook on top of me...hehe...Us students, if we don't know the universal equation of the world, DO know the severe effects of sleep deprivation!!! We also are experts of procrastination. I would explain this further, but I'll do it later...........hehe...*smirk* For me it seems as though the later I begin composing an essay, the better it turns out. I wish it weren't so, but that's the way it is. I wish I could be one of those people who works on their assignment 2 weeks in advance and is calm when the deadline approaches. I've tried doing that, but it doesn't work out. Often times, I am planting my rear on the computer chair and finish typing up my paper the night before. This is my tried and true method of working under pressure and yielding A+ scores. It always tickles my funny bone when professors rant about how they "know" how to distinguish the difference in quality of a last-minute paper and a polished one....for they NEVER seem to detect that mine are of the last-minute sort. I believe that it's such a rigid guideline to tell students that they should write a paper a certain time in order to do well. That isn't so. Do what works for YOU and you will kick butt and take names. That's my approach (Violent? Perhaps. Cheeky? Definitely!!! Haha).

How many of you out there watch Smallville? It's a television show based on the premises of DC Comics' character, Superman. I just got into it. It's now in its 2nd season I believe, but I've been watching the 1st season on dvd. My dad watches that show and he introduced me to it. Before I thought that it was cheesy, but that was because I only watched snippets here and there of the show. I never gave it a chance. Now that I have, the plot is very intriguing and the characters are growing on me. Strangely enough, the main character, Clark Kent is one of my least favourites. He's like Warrior Angel meets Goody-Goody-Two-Shoes. Lana Lang, although she is really pretty, is a static character. So far, I haven't seen any growth in her character. My favourite character is by far, Lex Luthor (the baldy). He's intelligent (sometimes really manipulative), he is a suave smooth-talker, he is a deep mystery, he's wealthy but has heart, and he has an edgy-almost-dark side. He's quite an intriguing character and he always says or does things that are thought-provoking. He's a riddle and candy for the mind (hehe, and eyes!).

There is this nice song called "Still Smiling" by a group called "A Perfect Day." I'm having the most difficult time finding where I can buy the group's album. I heard the song on the radio twice or so and it stuck on me. I really want to check out the group's other songs. The song is about keeping a smile on your face, even when your boyfriend is a jerk and even when your best friend's out of work. I think it has such a positive message...that you should try to be happy and cheer yourself up in any situation you find yourself in. In fact, there have been psychological studies done that show statistically significant correlations between smiling and feelings of happiness. Even if you are upset or sad, but you put on a fake smile, that fake smile can make you actually feel happy. The "smiling muscles" 'trick' yourself into thinking that you're actually happy.

Have you ever read this book called "Beautiful Joe" by Margaret Saunders? I just "discovered" it recently. If you enjoyed reading "Black Beauty", you'll like this book. Beautiful Joe is the name of a dog who was abused but is then adopted and cared for by the Morris family. The story is charming, told through the eyes of the dog himself. Some details of animal abuse are described in detail, however it certainly gets the message across that animals are loving creatures that should be treated kindly. I haven't finished reading this story, but it is very didactic and I can see why it was so popular back in the 19th century.

Well, this mish-mash of thoughts will have to come to an abrupt end. I'll write more another time when I have an abundance of time and a desperate need to cure boredom.......hehe.......Take care and always remember to spread the sunshine! Bye for now!
