In the Wake of Your Smile .............. << previous // next >>

Tuesday November 5th, 2002. - 2:55 PM

I've been up to quite a bit lately. You wouldn't even know, since I haven't written here for quite some time. Schoolwork is keeping me occupied, and when I DO manage to squeeze in some free time, I'm either hanging out with friends, working on clients' websites, or watching the much-loved television set. I will eventually get around to e-mailing all those people back who e-mailed me. Please hang in there. When you've got a busy schedule like I've got, and when you're a lazy daisy like I am, this is what's gonna happen: You're gonna have to play catch up on certain things. I hate playing catch up, but I have no other choice, since my schoolwork has first priority.

So, what have I been up to? Good question. Let's see if I can dig some of it out from my brain on the spot. Ahhh yes....I attended my mother's godmother's son's wedding (and met a guy who's in 1st year and who goes to a rival school...haha, BOOOOOO! Haha, just kidding), I pigged out excessively on Thanksgiving dinner, I got an awesome new 2003 vehicle and a new wide screen T.V., and if you add a few exams here and there and a few Hindu and Chinese deities from the articles I had to read for my World Religions class, you'd have it right to a tea. Well, actually, a lot more than that has happened, but right now I'm not intent on writing an online book (perhaps one day! *wink*).

For some strange reason, my T.A. (Teaching Assistant) for my World Religions tutorial reminds me of Ned Flanders from The Simpsons. It's comical. My T.A. is so anti-violence, pro-goody-goody-two-shoes, and of course the whole course on religion links him that much more to Ned Flanders. Really though, he's not a bad T.A. At least he's got a good sense of humour. I need that, especially since the class is early in the morning. Of course, sometimes his sense of humour is on the dry side, but I'll not get into that. Laughter always wakes people up, even if they WERE having a pleasant daydream. *Smirk*

A hilarious thing happened in the same tutorial, a few weeks ago. In the World Religions class, we've finished studying Hinduism and we're on to studying Chinese religions. Anyway, so we had to summarize some odes/religious text passages. Anyway, one of the girls in my group turns to me and says, " It's too bad that there aren't any Chinese people in our group, or they could explain all this to us." I burst out laughing. Why? I am Chinese (with a wee mix of Scottish and Irish as well)!!! That girl said that she had NO IDEA that I was Chinese! I find it amusing. I usually get mistaken for Spanish, and I don't know why. I never understood it. Anyway, unfortunately I couldn't shed some light on the texts in question, because it was the first time that I had read it, just like the rest of the people in the group. I'm a practicing Catholic, and this seemed to shock another girl in the group. It was weird. It's like people think that because you belong to a certain racial group, you must absolutely be involved in its corresponding religion. Just because you're Chinese doesn't instantly label you a Buddhist/Confucianist/Daoist. If you're an Indian, it doesn't label you a Hindu. Plus, in North America, the dominant religion is Christianity, so I didn't think it would be so shocking for them to find out that I'm a Catholic. Maybe you might be more "shocked" if I was living in India (where Hinduism is the dominant religion) and if I told you that I was a Catholic. Anyway, still, people tend to rely way too heavily on schemas and "stereotypes". Sometimes it's annoying, but I'm getting used to it a little now. I've been going through the whole "I-didn't-know-you-were-Chinese" thing since I was in gradeschool! People can't mentally digest the fact that here is a Chinese person who has naturally curly hair, round eyes, fair skin, and who has no accents, loves the English language and doesn't butcher it. Is that utterly so incomprehensible? I don't think so. There are lots of Chinese people who speak perfect English and write amazing essays. Race means nothing in this viewpoint. Sure, race is important for heritage and knowing where you came from and knowing your traditions, but when it comes to language, c'mon people! Anyone who has a brain and has enough will power and drive to succeed can learn a language. There are Caucasians who can speak foreign dialects like Cantonese or heck, even Punjabi. I highly admire these people! They are incredible! What talent! It's a gift, so use it! Look at the Pope! He knows so many languages (what is it, 18 or something?). Anyway, the Pope is Polish, but he can speak English, Japanese, Spanish, French and lots more!

Anyway, it feels kinda cool in a way as well, to confuse people with my looks. I mean, sometimes when people ask, I say, " Oh yeah, I'm Spanish." because that's what they want to hear. They believe it, that is, until 5 minutes later when I'm done joking around for kicks, and I tell them that I'm not Spanish. *Smirk* Yeah, I guess sometimes I like leading people on for a good laugh. Is that wrong? Perhaps, but hey, I'm not perfect, and I'm sure you're not either. I mean, if you WERE perfect, you sure wouldn't be hanging out with me....haha...*wink* You'd be a deity with the sun's rays radiating from your heavenly body. If I saw you in that form, I would probably get a little nervous. Usually people who see things like that are about to die, are given a sacred mission, or are given some sort of warning (at least, this is what I think...Nothing I say is engraved in stone, and if I find out that someone HAS indeed taken the trouble to engrave my words on a piece of stone, I will give him/her a coupon for a free consultation for when I become a Social Psychologist...*Smirk* Haha...) Really though, what I say is definitely NOT final. I'd be terribly scared if it were! I contradict myself sometimes.

Another funny thing happened, but this time it was in my Psychology Research Methods class. One female in the class, who was sitting near me, said, " You look a little like Michelle Branch in her 'Goodbye To You' music video." I was floored! *Smile* Personally I love Michelle Branch's music, ESPECIALLY that song and the way she looks in it. I guess it was the long black curly hair that reminded her of Michelle Branch. I don't know....but anyway, even if it was far-fetched, I took it as a compliment.

Since I'm on the topic of music, I read somewhere on a fan site that Avril Lavigne is going to be working on another music video, this time for her song, "I'm With You". I like that song, but I just wish she'd make a music video for "Anything But Ordinary". That's gotta be my ultimate favourite song on her debut album. Oh well, we'll see.

Okay, I know that this entry is rather short. It will have to do though. I need to finish this up, get off the computer and start studying. I've got an exam coming up for this Thursday. Yeah, it seems like all I talk about now is school. The next entry will be different, I promise. I'm really not THAT big of a nerd....I'm a little nerdette. *Smirk* Come back for more and always remember to spread the sunshine!

SONG STUCK IN MY HEAD: "Goodbye To You" by Michelle Branch. She's got such powerful pipes and at the same time, what a sultry voice! What talent.

LAST 2 SONGS I'VE LISTENED TO: "Falling Down" by Avril Lavigne. This is a song not on her debut album. It's from the Sweet Home Alabama soundtrack. It's a pretty good song. Also, I was listening to Christina Aguilera's new song, "Beautiful". Her vocal chords are incredible! I think it's silly how people compare her to Britney Spears. There is NO comparison! Britney can't compete with Christina, because Christina could kick her butt anyday (musically, anyway).

FAVOURITE SINGER OF THE MOMENT: Well, duh, I think you can figure it out....Michelle Branch! *Smile*

RECOMMENDED READING: "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley. Check out the original 1818 version of this classic. Trust me, it's not as shallow as the Hallowe'en costumes make it seem. It's got depth and breadth. It contains the philosophy of life and ethics. It's an eloquently writing piece of literature that takes you on a mental journey to the unknown. It is also great for aspiring young writers, because she wrote Frankenstein when she was 19 years old! Talk about talented!!!! Obviously, you can tell that it's my favourite book ever.

TIME TO ROCK: I'm getting more excited as Christmas approaches, because in December I'm going to buy myself an acoustic guitar and teach myself how to play it. I've basically tried every other instrument out there, so guitar was a natural next choice.
